Climate
Global climate change is the single biggest environmental threat facing the planet.
There is much that can be done to stop catastrophic climate change but decisive action is needed from governments and industry now. Look below to see how Colchester and North East Essex FoE is working to solve these problems.
The Big Ask
Final stages
The Climate Change Bill must hit its target
Colchester Friends of the Earth has been working on this campaign for some time now. You can read about it on the Big Ask History page.
The Climate Change Bill, which Friends of the Earth worked so hard to get, has been approved by Parliament. The last stage was to make sure that the law would be a strong law.
There were vital changes that needed to be made in order for it to be strong and effective.
Three key issues that needed to be included are:
• The 60% target to be changed to 80% or higher
• International aviation and shipping to be included in the bill
• Yearly targets of CO2 production rather than a five-year plan
We continued to put pressure on the Government to ensure that we got the law that our MPs agreed to when signing EDM 178.
Action on The Big Ask
*NEWSFLASH* The Bill was passed on 28th October, with the Government incorporating all our key issues at a late date. Mission accomplished! View 'The Big Ask' web site for more details.
